The College of Humanities focuses on the study of the humanities which serve as the foundation of all kinds of knowledges. The essence of humanities is to broaden people’s spiritual as well as intellectual capacities and to promote human dignity. In pursuit of these aims, the College deeply committed to reinforcing and restructuring the current curriculum by diversifying and increasing the number of liberal arts courses and major courses. Foreign language courses are also systemized and intensified to train students as future global leaders.
Chonnam's College of Humanities, which boasts the longest history among colleges in Chonnam National University, opened in 1952. The history of the College of Humanities traces its history to 1952 with the inauguration of the College of science and literature. In 1980 the College of science and literature transformed into the College of Natural science and Humanities & Social science in 1987 it became the College of Liberal arts. And then, the college was named as College of Humanities when it was officially reorganized in 2002. At present the College of Humanities encompasses eight important departments: Korean Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, German Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, Chinese Language and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, History, Philosophy.
The College of Humanities aims at the pursuit of humanism based on the principles of truth and freedom. In pursuit of these aims, the College encourages the development of a new spirit of learning through revisiting the old, the creative ability to adapt learned truths to a changing world, and the formation of new cultural paradigms to integrate the best of Eastern and Western cultures, all with the purpose of leading Korea forward into the new millennium. This College will be the center of the highest human life which all knowledges seek for, by laying down a solid foundation of history, philosophy, languages and literatures and then by continuing its pioneering work. The College of Humanities tries to be the leader of nurturing 21c global leader and jump as the point which is the kernel of the local culture.
